From the desk of Stephen Klein, president, The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts
Economic ups and downs are just a fact of life, an unavoidable roller coaster ride that can be more unsettling than fun, even during the up times. The good news is that the economy is cyclical. A year from now, things will certainly have improved. In the meantime, we all look for ways to adjust and to cope.
Many of you will be looking for ways to tighten your belts, and that might well mean spending less on entertainment. When confronted with uncertain forecasts and distressing headlines, it seems only natural to focus our resources on necessities and less on things that are considered luxuries.
I cannot tell you that you are wrong. Of course you will economize, and that could mean spending less on the arts. I would only hope to remind you that you have a spirit to feed as well as a body, and in tough times, the spirit perhaps needs more nourishment than ever.
