Musical theatre fans and Punk rock fans don't generally hang-out together, unless they just happen to be sitting side-by-side in a theatre experiencing the North American tour of Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT, described as "FLAT-OUT ELECTRIFYING" by the Boston Globe and "A PHYSICAL AND VISUAL KNOCKOUT" by the Detroit Free Press.

Green Day worked with Tony Award-winning Broadway director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) to create the rock opera which premiered at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2009. Reviewers saw "a world premier with Broadway aspirations written all over it" (SF Gate), and said the production packed " plenty of excitement and entertainment into a remarkably theatrical rock concert."
The one-act musical ran from March 2010- April 2011 on Broadway and received two 2010 Tony Awards for Best Lighting and Best Scenic Design, as well as a 2011 Grammy Award for Best Musical Album.
