On the evening of February 13, audiences for the Peking Acrobats performance, sponsored by the Yum! Family Series Program, enjoyed lively pre-show entertainment including a Tai Chi fan dance performed by third and fourth graders from Field Elementary, and a dance in honor of the Chinese New Year performed by the Louisville Lion Dance Team from the Asia Institute-Crane House.
Fostering environments for authentic arts and cultural exchange, providing professional development opportunties for teachers, and building relationships with our community partners are key activities for The Kentucky Center's School Programs and Programming Outreach staff.
The Field Elementary performance is an example of multiple meaningful interactions over time.
For example, Field Elementary School’s Mandarin Chinese language teacher, Cheng Fisher, learned the Tai Chi Fan Dance at The Kentucky Center’s summer Academy for Arts & World Language Integration in 2011, and the student's attire in the video above was paid for by a grant, administered by The Kentucky Center, from the Kentucky Department of Education.
Ms. Fisher's participation in the Academy for Arts & World Language Integration led to her teaching the dance to her students, which provided them with a wonderful performance opportunity at The Kentucky Center!
