From September through December 2016, Arts in Healing artist Pat Sturtzel led a quilting project with the women of Freedom House, a residential substance abuse program for pregnant women and women with young children. This quilting project consisted of the women designing prints, creating the print blocks using relief printmaking techniques, printing their designs onto pre-dyed fabric, arranging and sewing the blocks together and finally, sewing the quilt design onto a felt backing.
By the end of the four month project, the women finished creating a quilt for their baby from beginning to end. They learned about design, printmaking, sewing and ultimately, the community building power of quilting. It was a joy to see the women support and encourage each other throughout the process and to see how their own self confidence grew from this project! The quilts serve as testimony of the women's hard work at Freedom House and their resolve to provide a renewed healthy life for their children and themselves.
We wish the women at Freedom House continued success as they move toward their future!
